Buyer not collecting recorded item from post office

I sold an item which was paid for straight away. The buyer emailed me asking if I was going to send the item the next day and would I leave him positive feedback because he had paid for it so fast.
I replied saying yes and said that I would leave positive feedback once it had been delivered safely with no problems.
Since then I have tracked the item and it appears that the post office tried to deliver it and left a card for him to collect it, which he hasn't done.
He has 100% feedback but he appears to leave a lot of negatives for other people, so I've got a feeling he's not going to collect it and leave me a neg.
If the item gets returned to me do refund him the whole amount or is it reasonable to deduct the postage charges?

I would wait until its returned to you, then contact the customer again and tell them if they want their item they will have to pay postage again. Then don't do anything until he contacts you, do not refund straightaway.

How long are we talking here? Some people work and may not be able to get to a sorting office or have the item re-delivered, I had a package shown as not collected or delivered for a week once the initial delivery was attempted.
I wonder if this delay is due to the person picking up the package or whether the system is not showing it collected, also can you be sure they have received a card to say the delivery was attempted?
I took a package in for my neighbour yesterday and asked the courier to put a card through their door to say I had it, when my neighbour came to pick it up today she said she only found the card by chance on the path outside the house today, so I am guessing that it was only placed slightly in the letter box and blew out. Why not emailed them to say are they aware the package could not be delivered and is presently showing as unable to deliver!

Have you told the customer what the tracking says? It is quite common for no card to be left or to be thrown away with junk mail. You really want him to go along to collect it or arrange redelivery so it doesn't come back to you.
  • Thanks for the replies. Its been around 5 days since delivery was attempted. I did think about emailing him to check he had a recieved a card, but the feedback he has left for others put me off a bit incase I upset him. He's called quite a few sellers liars etc. I guess its the best course of action though.

My postman rarely leaves a card, Except last week i got a card but he didnt have my package with him.

I thought they were working on that issue of postmen not taking packets out that do not fit through a
letterbox or may delay them on their rounds?

Unrelated, but my postman once wrote on the front of a letter he had posted,

    "parcel outside",

and he really had just left a parcel outside my front door on the floor. Considering I have no front garden either.

collected items would show on the same day (with the old guns that need docked)
or instantly if they are using the new PDAs in the callers office
also bear in mind the customer track and trace doesnt show an item that is scheduled for redelivery, sent to a post office etc
