Does white vinegar smell?

Hi

Thinking of buying some white vinegar (distilled) to clean stuff around the house. However i don't want my home smelling like a chippy, so is the smell as strong as that of brown malt vinegar? i would be diluting the vinegar with water.

Well I used it neat to try to clean up the bottom edge of a shower curtain - put some in the basin and draped the curtain in it. Yes the house smelled like the local chippy! In fact after about 10 mins I couldn't stand the smell any longer and pulled the plug out! However the smell lingered on for the rest of the afternoon eventually smelling like very ripe cheese with the rest of the household complaining like hell!!! (By the way the curtain wasn't any cleaner!)

Yes it will, both are acetic acid!

It smells for a little while and then the smell wears off. You could search The Old Style board as they have an amazing list of things you can use white vinegar for including using it as fabric conditioner.

I gave up on it because of the smell (OH whining too much). However, Anfea and Kim & Aggie only use a few tablespoons to a cupful in their cleaners (usually have borax and/or bicarb in them as well), so it's possible that diluting it gets rid of the smell.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess due to smell, i will have to use lemon juice instead.
