So they took their time and effort to look at it?

    No need to get smart.

At the moment they have said pretty much what the RAC bloke said after 30seconds of looking at my car.

  • Think they can. Just charging for their time. Unfair as it is.

Sometimes these recovery guys get "in" with mechanic mates and send business their way for a cut of the profits.

Locally we know of one who does this with wrongly fuelled cars, garage he takes people to charges £180 a pop (far too much) for a simple and often quick/easy job. It's now the only thing this garage does and he's got cars lined up down the street most days. When people ask for a receipt he refuses to give one because a receipt would mean he couldn't give his mate the back hander.

Have you asked for a breakdown of the bill. If it is a main dealer that would probably be around an hours labour. Some also have a minimum 1 hour rule!

    Ask RAC customer sevices.
If all they have done is the same as the RAC man, you've like to think they haven't added anything, so why charge for their time.
If they've actually have to do work, or found something different to the RAC man, probably they can charge then.

they said it was for 1 hour - i think the parts they checked, clutch and starter motor are 'out of the car' at the moment and i guess they wont put them back in till i pay. Can they hold my keys ransom till I pay?

PS. They quoted 900quid to fit new clutch and starter motor. Its an MG ZR 52 plate.

  • Clutch and starter off in 1 hour?Lets say a clutch for it is £150 then surely the price should be £290 which is an hour to put them back in again plus the cost of a starter(or getting it reconned), nowhere near £900.Or maybe they haven't really removed those parts at all.

What's smart about suggesting you should pay for the work they've done?

I presume the parts that are out of the car weren't removed in 30 seconds?

Strange £70 to remove clutch and starter. So say it takes twice or thrice as long to put it back so £210/£280! So nearly £700 for clutch and starter motor? Would they be prepared for you to source the clutch and starter.
