Double Glazing - Profile 22 & Door Query

Hi folks,

I've got several quotes already from a mix of national and local companies, however, I was wondering what you thought of going to a trade supplier and then hiring a fitter separately to do the installation?

The profile being considered is 'Profile 22' - any feedback on this choice? I like the look of it especially the lack of a black seal on the perimeter of the glass.

With regard to the door, I'm concerned by the number of people we know (and threads on here) from users of uPVC doors where the locking mechanism has failed either due to wear and tear or the door 'settling'.

I have looked into composite doors but is there an option of having a wooden door with double glazed glass panels and a 'normal' lock (e.g. 5-lever mortice deadlock)?

If anyone has ideas in terms of the front door option and generally it'd be appreciated.

Profile 22 are I believe a privately owned UK company (they have a web site) based in Telford. I've been round the factory on a guided tour about 7 years ago. Very impressive and a largely automated process with many robotic functions. It was amusing watching a 6m long metal stillage scuttling away to the warehouse all by itself. There isn't much discernable difference between the uPVC profile manufacturers they all meet the apprpriate standards. The quality of window frame construction and the quality and competence of the window fitters is where your concerns should be addressed. Your best bet is to go for a local to you window maker and fitter. As for your budget an average of £130 made and fitted should be your guide. Decorative glass and or coloured frames will cost more.
In my house I have a uPVC front door and I dont like it (it feels flimsy) and I would prefer a composite door. The construction method of composite doors usually rules out traditional 5 lever locks as this would potentially weaken the door leaf structure. Additionally they never need painting just the occasional wipe down with soapy water. You need to do some more research on composite door manufacturers e.g. Homesafe, Evergreendoors and there are many others.

    Thats all for now.
