Carrots in root trainers?

Anyone tried this?

Thought it would be a good idea to get the seeds germinated inside in late january and then open up the root trainer and planting out in mid march, that way the roots arent disturbed.

Good idea or not?

if you use cardboard loo roll tubes, you can just plant the whole thing in the ground. the cardboard will disintegrate in the soil no probs. You'll have beautiful straight, strong carrots!

    Works for parsnips too!
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire

Yes it works, and recommend the looroll, but you need to plant them out as soon as the root gets to the base of the looroll, so I would wait a few weeks before planting the seed.

Otherwise you get a very wonky carrot.

my dad used to use drain pipes filled with sand - less chance of bugs, took up less room and nice straight carrotts, also looked interesting in the garden with the different heights - he used to make a feature out of them!

Have you seen the price of drain pipes recently?

This is what the exhibition gardeners do for carrots and parsnips.

I think Bernard Matthews does it with chickens too, as his always come out in perfectly round slices. Cruel, yes, but truly 'bootiful.' :)

dad was a bricky so that probably explains where he got the pipes from!
