Carpet cleaning shampoo - £28.19 a litre

Options
My neighbour kindly loaned me his carpet cleaning machine. When I went to buy the cleaning fluid to replace that which he had passed over with the machine I was astonished to find it costs £19.99 in Currys, the equivalent of £28.19 a litre. That was for the same brand as the machine, but other brands were very similar. I'm sure I could have shopped around and saved a few quid, but the point remains that this stuff is expensive.

The active ingredients - essentially a mix of surfactants with an anti-foam agent - is very similar to some liquid detergents for automatic washing machines. Carpets are a mix of natural and synthetic fibres - much like the clothes I wash.

Is there some magic in the mix to justify the extraordinary price - and if not why not use the same detergent as I use to wash my clothes?

    Phew that's expensive!
I usually just buy the little bottles from Tesco.
On Saturday I'll be doing my bedroom carpet so I'll give it a go with some Morrisons liquid detergent that I bought, see how it goes. I'm not fussed if the colour goes a bit funny as it's being replaced after Christmas.
    I doubt it'll hurt it though as it's just a Berber. :)
