Free gas for 4 years

Options
I have had free gas at my house for 4 years, or rather never received a bill. I posted about this once before in Feb 2009 ( Free Gas supply posted 04-02-2009, 10:33 PM )

I am about to rent out my house so wanted to get this matter resolved. Does anyone know if the gas companies are more lenient if the customer contacts them to inform them they have fallen off the system ? Is it true I will only be charged for gas used over the last year, even though I have lived here over 4 years ?

Many Thanks for any advice.

But clearly you haven't contacted them, so why should they be 'lenient'?
Presumably you are only doing so now because the house is about to be rented out.

If there is no registered supplier for your gas meter, therefore you do not have a Meter Point Referance number (MPR) then you will have free gas until one is created and a supplier register's your meter.

This is all fine, but if you have a problem with your gas supply, leak, meter issue etc you wont have anyone to contact.

With this property being new it would suggest that this is a IGT site (independant gas transporter) who own and are responsible for the supply pipes and meter.
There could be some information on or around the meter to identify which IGT company as there are many. if you cannot locate which IGT company I would suggest contacting the builder if possible.

The other thing you can do in this instance is called your prefered supplier, I suggest your current electric supplier and advise them of the situation. They should be able to establish if there is a MPR registered for your property and meter. If there is not then they can create one, register your supply with them take an up to date meter read and they will bill you from this meter reading.

The reason why they wont back date the usage is because they werent responsible for previous gas used.

All that said worst case scenrio for you is that there is a supply registered for your address and eventually the current supplier finds out and bills your for the lot.

Dont ignore the situation, its not going to go away on its own!

Try ringing this number: 0191 216 3000 to get your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) which is the unique identifying number of the gas meter at your property.
