Renewals for Domains

Not sure if this is in the right place but I could do with some help,

A year ago today I purchased a domain for around £1, with 123-reg,
I havn't had access to the email address I purchased it with recently, and when I logged in today there was an invoice for around £11 as a domain renewal which they say they have automatically taken out of my account as the details are on file.

The website is no longer of use to me and was only used for a few months, I logged into their site and they do not have any of my card details on file, so they must of used my Paypal account, although I cannot find anywhere where it states this or lets me remove the details.

Just thought I would warn people of this, to make sure they dont have automatic renewals, does anyone think I may of chance of getting my money back? also it is £10 more than the original domain I purchased.

Thanks,
Sarah

  • I have received a reply from the company, and have been informed they won't give me a refund. So looks like im stuck with a website I don't want/use.

Does anyone know if theres anyway Id be intitled to a refund? As I have searched all of there website and cannot find anywhere to remove my paypal details?, I think it is unfair that they are keeping them and not letting me edit them. if anyone knows where this is located please let me know.

Also is there a way of selling your domain name?, so that I can recover the cost of this?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

There is a tick box on 123 domain site to remove "automatic renewal"

I suggest you untick that box right now and at least save yourself from more expense in 2 years time

You are bound by their Terms and Conditions, which they publish on their website. So, for example, one of their conditions of use is that you must have valid payment details registered with them, and another is that you must give 30 days notice of cancellation (with some exceptions, none of which seem to apply to your case).

In defence of 123-reg (and I should add that I have no connection with them at all), many people ~like~ to have their domains auto-renewed, because it saves them forgetting and having someone snatch the name and then charge them an arm and a leg to get it back. I also don't think you could reasonably claim that increasing the charge from £1 is unfair, as that was obviously a promotional price.

Whether the domain name has any value to anyone else depends entirely on what name you have.
