I'm wondering if turning the tvr down on a radiator makes any difference to my gas bill. I have a combi boiler and obviously the boiler is still being used so does the tvr have any effect on the amount of gas I use?
thanks

Yes, it will reduce your gas usage ( maybe not by much, but it will have an effect ). The fact that your boiler is a combi is irrelevant. Any boiler will ( should ) switch on and off as required to maintain the required temperature. Over a given period, it will spend more time "on" to maintain 22 degress than it will to maintain 18 degrees.0

thing to do is turn down your room thermostat to turn off the boiler once the house is at the desired temperature.0

But that is exactly what a room stat does. It turns off the boiler when the room has reach the desired temp. If you turn it down, the room will not maintain that temp, but get colder. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
All the rads have tvrs on them and they are all set to maximum. I've got 1 thermostat in the house. What number (approx) should this be set at in a 3 bed house?0

At whatever temp you want that zone to be at...
Then regulate the individual rooms by adjusting the TRV's. Most people have the living areas around 20C and bedrooms a bit cooler. But it's entirely up to you.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
The thing is though, I've only got 1 wall thermostat - on the landing - and I'm wondering what that should be set at. Do the rad tvrs override that?0

Try the room stat on 18 or 20c.
When this clicks off, all the rads will go off.
If you set this higher then the trv's will shut off individual rads as the air temp in the rooms heats up, so you could just be left with just the rad in the hall/landing on.0 -
I've just checked the thermostat - it's currently on at 26 degrees!0

We do not have a thermostat, (apart from the one on the boiler) just TRVs on the radiators.
If we do not use a room the TRV is turned down or off.
The upstairs rads are very rarely on.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -

That's far too high ! Set the main thermostat at around 20 - 21 ish, that's generally reckoned to be a comfortable temperature for most people.
The TRVs will override the thermostat to keep individual rooms cooler, but ultimately when the room that the stat is in reaches the set temperature, the boiler will shut off.
The TRVs on each radiator is a matter of personal choice, and trial and error, but, as has been mentioned before, most people tend to opt for a warmer lounge / living area and cooler bedrooms. But it's up to you.0
