My sister is after a good freebox that record direct onto install harddisk similar to sky+. It would be nice to be able to get the videos off the machine as well onto her ubuntu linux computer and then write them dvd to take with her on travels with her window XP laptop(its a uni 1 and she a bit scared to put to much software or non education hardware on it). There is quite a lot of rules about the usage of her laptop she gets too help her with special needs at univeristy course.
Her linux computer is an AMD Duron 850MHZ 128Meg 20Gig Hard Disk DVD/CD WRITER.
Thanx for your all your advice.
Would it be easier to have an embedded dvd writer inside the firebox to transfer the programmes/movies off the box(instead of doing it on her computer)
I do remember seeing that some freebox can be connected to a network via rj45.

You can record onto hard disk and transfer to the dvd or record straight onto the dvd as well as having an SD card. This would take out the requirment to copy it onto her linux box.
The other choice is something like a topfield that doesn't have a dvd drive built in but i think is linux based and can be networked.
Also there is myth tv which runs under linux and may work with a pc freeview adapter.Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
I was thinking about myth tv but she is living down in exmouth and up in redditch. She getting itchy feet to buy something now she now has freeview ariel in her own room. She got a little usb freeview pen for her laptop , but the IT tech took it all off her XP laptop and big warning not to be messing around with her laptop and will void her warranty. I can understand the rules when the laptop is not really hers and is on loan etc for helping her with special needs.
