Painting pine furniture ...

Options
Just bought a bargain second hand solid pine table with 4 chairs which are a dark orangey antique pine colour.

I'm really into the country style shabby chic painted cream with pine furniture at the moment ..... if I wanted to paint the chairs would it be as easy as sanding them down with some sandpaper and painting them with woodpaint ?? Any tips or ideas gratefully received - am a mum at home with not much time for DIY so the easier the better !!!!

Thank you

  • If the finish is wax then this will have to be cleaned off. Use meths and a coarse cloth e.g. a Scotch cloth to vigourously scrub the wood. Wipe with a clean soft cloth dampened in meths after using the Scotch cloth. Then sand and treat as if new bare wood.

If it is a stain/varnish then lightly sand to provide a 'key' and apply your finish as per the instructions for it.

In either method wipe the timber after sanding with a soft cloth dampened with white spirit or meths immediately before painting to remove all traces of dust.

a good technique that works is to paint a base coat of say a dull red, then a top coat of white.
when dry, rub away gently, at the edges etc with some wire wool. to allow the dull red to show through.

just do enough and then stop, when you are happy with the look.

    ps,
    use water based paint.
    Get some gorm.

If youf like shabby chic, look at the F & B colours and various eggshells from Crown etc!
  • Thanks all for your helpful replies and advice.

Yes, Suisidevw I LOVE Farrow & Ball - got the colour chart sitting on my mantelpiece !!!!

I think I will start on the chairs - they should be easier ??!!!

They are a varnished finish - not an expensive wax type - bog standard from Argos !!!
Not too worried as I only paid less than £15 for the table with 4 chairs.

I love the duck egg and cream colours that are "in" at the moment so will try those and perhaps get a matching tablecloth for the table until I get brave and expert enough to tackle it !!

    Thanks again

Avoid silk finish , stick to matt or eggshell. Paint suppliers/merchants can mix colours for you often cheaper than rip-off posh paint.
