big or small

I have a large house in a picturesque village that i will want to lett when i move to france in two years time, as it's full of stairs on three levels it's not a place i would live in in my old age, as it's worth about 500k should i sell and buy something in town or even two smaller properties that will give me an income and enable me too sell one if i get hard up. as i feel it may be too expensive and not be lett continuously. thanks.

Is it in a popular rental location? If so you might be ok.

Buying two smaller ones might mean twice as much hassle for less than twice as much return.

Do you need to keep a place in this country, or could you just sell up and take the money? Depends on your situation.

My in-laws sold up their big house. It doesn't really make sense to rent bigger houses as the bigger they get, the less the rent can be obtained % wise in comparison to smaller houses.

Having the money in a high interest savings account will almost definately bring you a better return, security and peace of mind. If you do want to keep a foot on the ladder, I would choose something quite small in an area that will rent well.

i'm not sure if i will return, if one of us dies which is quite likely as my girlfriend is ill, i may want to come back but not to the house we have as it has far to many stairs, so a little apartment in town would be more suitable.

I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriend :(

You've answered your own question though. Why keep something you don't need anymore, especially if it isn't going to pull you in massive returns? Buy yourself a little apartment in town and rent it out.
