Smell of Gas from Gas Fire

Is it normal to have a smell of gas from the gas fire when it's on? I've noticed this happen a couple of times now when having it on for a while. The most recent ( tonight ) it really was quite strong you could smell the gas straight away from walking into the room (although it's only a small room). It's god me quite worried as a felt a bit dizzy (or this could have been a placebo effect).
I've turned the fire off and am not going to use it pending further advise. I even opend the windows such was the smell.
Surely this isn't normal? :eek::eek:
It's a pretty old school fire place - in only moved in recently - there is a safety certificate from earlier this year.

I would get this investigated by a gas safe registered person asap. You can find a local one through this site

Its better to be safe than sorry regarding gas
hope you get it sorted soon0 -
It's not normal to have any smell of gas at any time.
Contact a Gas Safe registered person/company AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and get it rectified.
Turn off your gas now at the meter.Forgotten but not gone.0 -
I can't turn off the meter it's locked away downstairs somewhere (it's a flat in a communual block) the smell has gone now i've turned the fire off. Your posts have me very scared! I'm definately not going to use it again until it's checked out.
Is it normal to have leaks from gas fires when they are on?0 -
We can smell gas in the room where our gas fire is. When the fire is not on. Unfortunately, the landlord nor the gas engineer can smell it!!!! The have checked it, and said it is fine, there are no leaks. We lived here for 20 months now, and it is there. We even had friends coment about this, but nothing we can do if gas engineer can't find anything and says it is safe.
Now we are buying the house this fire is going to get disconnected and bricked off.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
Any smell of gas or what you think maybe gas and you should call 0800 111999 immediately. National Grid will be out within the hour and it is a free service.
They will not fix it, but will make sure you are safe.
As you are in a flat, you should have your own gas isolating valve at the first point of entry into your flat. Have a good look around, especially, maybe, under the sink.
You MUST also have a key provided for the meter cupboard downstairs.0 -
this happened to me about 15 years ago, my then boyfriend said it must be ok as the cat was sitting in front of the fire "rolls eyes"
after 3 days i phoned the emergency gas number and i have to say the were brilliant, told us to open all windows and doors (turn of gas fire of course) and they were at the house within 15 mins!!!!
they had a meter detecter thing and right enough there was a leak coming from the gas fire, my then boyfriend looked horrified and i felt stupid for not phoning them straight away....they fixed the leak there and then too:)totally a tog!:D0 -
My dad had a new gas fire fitted recently as he was having a bit of a makeover in his living room. When the carpet fitters were putting down the new carpet they commented that they could smell gas from the fire. It was not on at that time of course. Sure enough, when I got down on to the floor I could smell it too. My dad is nearly 90 and he had not noticed it.
Anyway, I immediately contacted the plumber who had fitted the fire and he came back and sorted it out.
Better safe than sorry.0 -
Phone the emergency number if you think you can smell gas. They will come out quickly - we did this a couple of years ago after OH thought she could smell gas. As it happens we didn't have a leak but it wasn't worth taking the risk.0
