    ted,

Could you tell me a bit more about using ground flaxseed instead of eggs/ fat in baking?

My OH has high cholestrol and I heard about flaxseed in baking on here, but Ive not been able to find muhc about it on the internet. but sounds fascinating as eggs & fat are 2 of the things he can only have very scant amounts of, which is murder for me trying to make anything for our sweet teeth :)

Try looking at https://www.parsleysoup.co.uk for recipies for VERY yummy cakes that don't include eggs & use oil (you can use flax or hemp) instead of butter or marg. I can personally recommend the carrot cake, one uses oil & one uses mashed banana & no oil, & the chocolate cake 2. They are to die for, non vegans I've served them to can't believe they don't contain eggs.
  • The Poundland capsules are 500mgs I think. My children take 2 a day each as advised by a doctor and their school work has improved 10 fold.
Two 500mg omega 3 fish oil capsules are likely to contain a mere 300mg of omega 3 You will see that the Equazen capsules used in the research totalled around 800mg. While I can see Blacksaturn is well satisfied, others may prefer to regard the amounts used in the trial as a minimum.

If cost of Equazen is prohibitive then Zipvit Omega Juice is an alternative At £5.95 for 360ml a half a teaspoon of this would provide an amount almost equivalent to the Adelaide trial at a cost of around 4p/d a full teaspoon would provide 1500mg omega 3 for a cost of 8p/d.

This is the recent adelaide adhd trial used Equazen EyeQ. The daily doses of the fatty acids used were: EPA, 558 mg; DHA, 174 mg, GLA, 60 mg. These were given over three doses in a day.

My grandchildren have no problems taking Zipvit OJ.

About 500mg per day combined EPA/DHA is a reasonable minimum target. But for people who think they are deficient now a build up period of a higher amount daily for around 3 months would be a good idea, dropping to the lower amount after deficiency status has been dealt with.

try a bit of pesto sauce on the toast before topping with sardines in tomato sauce then top with grated chees and grill. Very tasty
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Omega 3 is, I'm told, also to be found in Canola oil (rapeseed) and quite a few green vegetables such as broccoli. Nuts like peanuts and pistachios have it, as do seeds like poppy, pumpkin and sunflower.
  • I love tinned sardines and so does DD2 but DD1 won't touch them, nor will she take omega 3 capsules. I just take the sardines and lay them on a piece of toast and grill them until warmed through then sprinkle with vinegar - ooh I could just eat some now! I like the ones in tomato sauce too, but I like them mashed in sandwiches with real butter on the bread!

Would they take the liquid form of Omega 3? Theres an orange flavoured one for sale in Boots. My youngest daughter has 2 teaspoons per day which gives 600mgs.

  • I read somewhere that Tuna from a tin does not count because when it is processed the oil is lost. Anyone know if that is true?
  • Pbradley936

Yes that is true, it needs to be fresh tuna, but boy its a lot more expensive!!
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.

I have tried the liquid stuff but she refused to even taste it - I have the stroppiest fussiest DD - I despair of her eating habits and can only hope she will grow out of it (she's 16).
