Is there anyway to get notfied if you have email from outlook express when the proramme is closed instead of outlook sitting on your desktop all day?

You have to keep it running to receive the emails. You could have it minimised so it wouldn't take up space on the desktop. In Tools - Options - General tab make sure 'Check for new messages every' is ticked. An icon will appear in the system tray when a new email arrives.
Alternatively, run a POP3 email checker.0
