Wood Floors - in Kitchen

We’re renovating our new house, and will be ripping through the downstairs in the new year. We would like to lay engineered wood throughout the downstairs, including in the utility room & kitchen. As an American, used to American houses, I assumed this would be fine. We went to a flooring ‘showroom’ over the weekend, and they vehemently said we could NOT put solid or engineered wood in a kitchen. Why not? Are US wood floors installed differently than UK wood floors? Or is it just convention?

I don't think it is a question of "cannot", more possibly "should not" or "unwise".

Wood floors are easily damaged by water spills, which could easily happen in a kitchen or utility room.

Also dropped pots/hard things can easily dent the wood, and sharp knives dropped could damage it too.

If you are Ok with this, then go ahead and lay wood flooring.

We have a wooden floor in our kitchen. In fact it runs from the front door in the downstairs hall through too and including the kitchen. It has been down for three years and looks good, is easy to keep clean. The floor has a satin varnish finish.

It has not warped or otherwise deteriorated. It is mopped weekly and any spills are wiped up.

I cannot think why it would not be suitable for a kitchen. I agree it could be dented, but this could happen by high heels in any room of the house.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

Maybe they have concerns about slip hazards when it's wet?
