Connection Keeps Dropping - Would Like Advice

I would appreciate some advice regarding my internet connection.
My basic setup is that I have a Netgear Wireless Router in my bedroom. I work on the internet in the living room or kitchen and my laptop is connected via a Homeplug. Up until about three weeks ago this system was working great since then it has been doing my head in.
Here's where I'm at. I turn on my computer and there is a connection to the internet there. I'm happily doing my business when all of a sudden the connection drops. It appears to be that if I go upstairs cut the power supply to the router wait about 30 seconds or so and then power up again that I regain a connection. While this happens most of the time it doesn’t happen 100 percent of time time, sometimes it is as simple as removing the connection from my Homeplug into the socket of the computer. Other times – well the wonders of modern computers are a mystery to me.
When I am connected and I check my connection strength it always seems to say 'poor' even though I've no great complaints about loading times. It satisfies me.
My router must be at least eight years old, the homeplugs possibly three years old and I'm wondering if I might have a hardware fault. I'm sure the fault been with my ISP as the fault is happening to often and as I said above with a bit of fiddling about I do seem to be able to regain a connection. I'm wondering if either the Homeplug or the router has reached the end of their lives. The router I leave on 24/7, it is in a well ventilated area. I'm sure the homeplug has gotten some abuse over the years what with been plugged in and pulled out and maybe even getting the odd knock
Any suggestions

"poor" connection strength is wireless? but you are using homeplugs instead?!!

Hello Kevin, just to clear something up that you said ie " When I am connected and I check my connection strength it always seems to say 'poor'" but I thought you are using homeplugs? Are you using Hoomeplugs and Wireless on the same machine, which is not a problem per se but if the machine is dropping connection it may be because of the poor wireless signal. Bit confused really.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0

Pardon if I sound stupid but here's is where I'm at. If I click the internet icon (or whatever it is called) at the bottom right of screen I can see the following: Currently connected to SSID internet access. The icon is like a small tv screen.
Then under that under the heading 'wireless network connection' appears. I see:
SSID: and it is currently giving a signal strength of excellent.
TalkTalk3433b giving a signal strength of poor. (My ISP is F2S)
Other Networks: again giving a signal strength of excellent.
I started to play around with the settings a little bit (dangerous Kevin, dangerous) and SSID offers me three choices for a network Home, Work, and Public. I've set the network to Home
Out of curiosity I've just ran Local Area Connection – Diagnose and it tells me that my computer appears to be properly configured, but the device or resource (DNS Server) is not responding. But at this point in time I am able to connect to the internet.
I'm thinking out loud here, but is it possible that when I connect to the internet that I connect via the Homeplug but that somehow the wireless then takes over and then drops the connection. Yet I don't think so because the icon stays still and doesn't change to the little bars which I take it appears when wireless is been used.
Am I any less confusing?
