Hello All.
Is there anyone out there that knows the answer to the following please.
The year Im checking is 2004 - 2005
I started a job in Jan 2004 and left September 2005.
Is my Tax Code different on my P45 to my P60 because my last months of employment was 5 months after Tax Year April 2005?
So P60 was for April 2004 - April 2005 then P45 where the code is different was for April 2005 - when I left work Sept 2005,5 months after new Tax Year?
Is the above correct?
If so how do I work out if Ive paid too much in these 5 months?

yes the code is different because it's 2 different tax years 04/05 and 05/06.
The personal allowance for under 65's in 05/06 was £4895 which would equate to
£4895 / 12 = £407.92 tax free per month so anything above that would be taxableThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Thankyou for your reply.
Dont mean to sound daft but how do I know if Im owed any?0 -
Did you move to another job in Sept 05?
If you give your total income for 05-06 / total tax paid (and Code number) ......... one of us will work it out.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

The (full) year 2004-05 ties up, as you would probably expect.
For 2005-06 ................. the tax due at the year end is £1017. As you've paid £1680 then that's an overpayment of £663. Created by the fact you had several months unused personal allowance.
If you're confident you didn't reclaim that - I would get on to it now! Send the P45 (copy it first) with a covering letter to HMRC (address on the P45 .... but check it first as it's a while ago and HMRC have rationalised a bit since then). Post the reference (3 digit District part) if unsure and someone will check the address? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Thankyou so much
I know I didnt claim this back.It would be a letter and check that I would of recieved wouldnt it?
Should they have sent it to me years back?
Are we allowed to phone them up?0 -

I would 'phone them if you're uncertain if the refund was made (it would have been a calculation + cheque if there was no further employment that year).
But it's unlikely to have been made if not initiated directly by you or indirectly via a new job. As the reconciliations currently being made (08-09 and 09-10 only)were impossible, on this scale, prior the new PAYE system now in placeIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I got a tax rebate for year 2003-2004 which was a calculation and cheque. So this is obviously not to do with 2055-2006.
When Im on the phone do you think it would be ok to ask them to go over others?
How far back are we allowed to claim back? Do you know?0 -

........... there's a table there showing how far you can go back. Other than the last couple of years I doubt they'll do too much via the 'phone ......... but they may push a note to the back office or ask you write for earlier years. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Thankyou,Thankyou,Thankyou so much for your help.So grateful.
Rung them up & a very nice lady let me know that I am due a refund. It will take about 6 weeks.Four weeks for referral and 1 week for calculation to be done.So 6 weeks for roughly.
So heres hoping a cheque will be in the post for £668.
Do you think it will be what you said? Im still trying to understand it all.i didnt ask her how much it would be for as I dont think she wouldve known cause they got to do the calculation.
Im unemployed so this will be a brilliant Christamas/New Year present.
