    That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Or maybe they will just think "why the hell should we give him a pay rise if he's about to leave anyway".


    That's not often how it works though. Employers generally don't like taking new people on, interviews don't tend to weed out the people who will upset the balance of the workplace, mainly because most people are completely different in interviews from real life, and they don't weed out the arrogant bar stool lawyers (or is it bar room) who within a minute of joining will try and turn everything into a battle about rights (which they basically ahve none of at that stage anyway)

    Interviewing takes time, sifting takes time, advertising takes time. If you already have a ready made staff member who is good at the job and gets on with everyone most employers would rather keep them on. Most employers are also well aware of the game of it all and realise that until someone hands in their notice (and even then that's not definitely final) or leaves then they might still stay. They're giving a pay rise to convince the staff member to stay, not as a nice send off for their last month working for them.
