underpaid by 14k... help!

I work for a large IT organisation
I began over 4 years ago on the service desk where i was paid 16k
I was then promoted 8 months later to 18k and am now on 19k after 2 pay reviews
A year after that I changed from one system to another more high profile system and a year later got promoted to a managerial role.. but no pay rise
For the past year i have been in this position and I have been told that a pay rise of 10% (taking me to ~21k) is on the cards although I have been told many times that I will be getting a pay rise and have not had one...
I am sick to death of feeling taken advantage of... in previous meetings my bosses have said that their hands are tied and that company policy dictates that they cannot give me a pay rise..
Although since i have been working in this position there have been 3 ppl who have joined the team for 33k...!
I would be very grateful for any suggestions and ideas you may have on how best to approach this situation, ideally i would like to stay with this company as the job is very rewarding and the people are fantastic to work with
I have souped up my CV and am actively seeking employment elsewhere
The company have paid for numerous training courses which do help me feel less taken advantage of ...

    Accidentally leave your CV (after checking it does not contain any embellishments you wouldn't want your employer to know about) and ringed job adverts on your desk, inadvertantly not adequately covered by the paper you were "attempting" to hide it under.... or accidentally leave the folder containing these documents on your managers desk, and forget to collect them until he looks inside to see what is in the folder....

    In other words, the less you say about it, the more it will look like you are ready for the off....You have raised it and it hasn't worked, so stop raising it, and run the flags out instead and they may reconsider their position regarding how much you mean you want a rise!

    Grow some balls. The reason the other people got £33k is because they're not scared of talking money and are able to sell themselves. You've now proven on a few occasions that you can be easily palmed off and saving them £1000s. If it were my business, I'd fob you off for as long as possible as well with you proving such an easy touch.

    Unfortunately this is the situation at the moment in large IT organisations, I work for one and most people are in the same situation. There are only two ways to get a pay rise:

    1. Move to a different organisation offering more money.
    2. Get an interview and an offer for more money and take it to your manager; they may offer you more, but be prepared to take the new job.

    What I can assure you is there is no loyalty for employees from employers in this industry any more, so don't think they will look after you, do what is best for you!

    Rubbish. If they wanted to manage him or her out of the organisation then they wouldn't need an excuse to do so. That being the case, the OP wouldn't be here asking how to negotiate a pay rise - they would be here about much bigger problems than being underpaid.

    dmg's point is that your advice may be the prompt for the company to start managing OP out of the organisation. The bigger problems you talk about would be future problems arising from following your advice.

  • yeah very tempting to get angry and tear my bosses boss a new one... but would rather keep this job and stay on good terms if possible..

    have let me line mgr know that i am seeking employment elsewhere, dont know if this has been said to his boss..

    My real experience your bosses hate to have to justify rises for there people during the pay rise rounds so they don't alway try.

    When the pay rises are done there is a budget and they spread out to those with the most prolific/visible images.

    You have to make sure the bosses above your own boss and the bosses of other groups trying to get some of the budget know how valuble you are to an organization so your name get mentioned in meetings as often as possible, then your boss knows they don't have to back up a claim for your pay rise it will be taken for granted when asked for or there are ready made justifications that cannot be questioned.

    The fact you have let the situaton go on for so long might make it hard for you to do this in the current company unless you are allready visible in the organisaziion beyond your current bosses.

    Be prepared to leave

    Find out where the 3 new people came from there may be vacancies.
