breakdown cover policy

hi,

last night i had an issue with my car not starting and had no option but to join the aa over the phone for assistance. The policy cost me around £210. Having looked around on the internet and in particular on this website i can see that i can buy the same policy in double figures if i buy online. I now want to cancel mypolicy with the aa and buy online however the aa did mention over the phone yesterday that if i cancel within their 14 day cooling off period they would keep £130 off what i paid bssicly for the call out yesterday. I questioned how much i would have been charged from the contractor that attended to me yesterday on behalf of the aa and the chap said no more then £65 as they were based local to where i had broken down. Can or should i recieve more back from the aa when canceling? And if so how do i go about it?

Why not just accept that you should have bought the cover before the breakdown instead of trying to wriggle out of it after the event.

AA are quite within their rights to retain whatever their terms and conditions say - if that's £130 so be it.

You could have called out a garage who may have charged £300 to recover you.

£65 maximum does not sound right, Depending on the time we could get £20 / £40 call out bonus.

im not trying to wriggle out of anything my friend. The reason iwant to cancel is because basicly ive been ripped off. The exact same policy is around £50 online but because i was in a situation where i wanted immediat assistance they took advantage of this and charged me 4 times over. Even then aa did not send their own man but gave the job to a contractor who told me £60-£65 is what i they would have charged me had i phoned them direct.
  • i phoned at 6:37pm andthe contractor was with me at 7:20

    Yes you are.

You've ended up paying the going rate for not having bothered to take out breakdown recovery protection.

No it isn't. If you'd bought it online would they have come out immediately? I suspect not, so it ain't the same.
but because i was in a situation where i wanted immediat assistance they took advantage of this and charged me 4 times over.
Think of it this way. A typical car breaks down once every four years. So somebody paying £50 a year will pay the same as you.

I'm sorry, but your attitude stinks. If your home had been burgled and all the contents removed and you rang up to get insurance on the stolen goods, do you think they should charge you £20 a month? I think they'd tell you to do one.
Even then aa did not send their own man but gave the job to a contractor who told me £60-£65 is what i they would have charged me had i phoned them direct.
But you rang the AA. You agreed to their price.
ok i rang the aa. The policy is bought from aa. Why send someone else to attend and not the aa? Because they cant rip you off if they did, thats why.
Perhaps if the provided their own patrol van for every call out you'd have had to pay £150 instead of £130. You broke down. You called them. They quoted a price that you agreed to. They sent somebody round who fixed it.

  • My car wouldn't start on Monday evening due to flat battery. AA sent out a contracted recovery firm based about 15 miles away from where I was. God knows how much that would of set me back. I'm just glad it was included in my £28 AA membership. Well worth the money!
