Building Regs. Which way is the best way?

I want to build a garage. Planning is needed but not likely to be a problem.

I intend to use a local firm to do the groundworks/slab and another firm to supply and erect the garage. I'll do all the finishing work myself.

Building regs approval will also be needed. In the past I have spoken to several people that have done similar jobs and they have used a scheme whereby the council turn up at various stages of completion and sign off the work done (or not). However, my local building control bods have indicated that they would rather have a full submission in advance.

What is involved in a full building regs submission? Is the staged inspection alternative a better choice for a job like this? If so, what does that involve?

they would still come and inspect at certain stages no matter which route you go down, the warrant submission would just be a set of detailled drawings which they look at and approve then when they come on to site, check you are building as intended.

just means a bit more input at the start which should mean there are no real hassles with the build...
