Laptop memory help

Hey folks,
Am hoping someone might be able to help, I'm not really big on the tech front. I had a laptop that broke (battery/charger issues) and got a new one. I've been told there is a way to remove the hard drive from the broken one and put it into some form of caddy so I could plug it into the new one through a usb port.

I was hoping that doing this I could use it as an external hard drive and get my pics and music from it too.

Problem is I have no idea what to buy or how to take the hard drive out.

Thanks for all help!

  • You can get an external enclosure called an icy box that you install the hard drive into that then plugs into a usb port.

Is there only one kind or different kinds for different computers?

There are different types for different sizes of hard drives . Have a look at this one.

Quite straightforward to do .... but as a matter of interest, who told you that your laptop was "broke" because of a battery/charger probelm ....?

The old hard drive could have one of two types of interface. You'd need to get the right type of USB enclosure to match it. You may be able to look up the type from the laptop's model number but it's best to whip the hard drive out to see what type it is to be sure. You're going to have to get it out anyway after all.

Where would you have recovered your pictures from if the hard drive had conked out/been stolen/burned down?

The charger actually exploded. Took it to a local computer shop, they tried to get a heap of different chargers to work but nothing did so they said it wasn't any use.

I wouldn't have been able to get them, yeah I know it's silly. Will make sure they are safer in future, lesson learned!
