want to paint some stag minstrel furniture

I was hoping to buy some stag minstrel bedroom furniture and paint it white and add new handles. wondered if anyone knew if this was the right sort of wood for this.

the furniture says "Nice mahogany finish",
what does this mean, and will it be suitable?

Nice mahogany finish probably means wood coloured plastic.
Why not buy white furniture?

Stag Minstrel furniture is usually wood with a veneer on top, which is varnished to give a shiny finish
If you want to paint you will probably have to sand the varnish coating off first (or maybe there is some sort of primer you can apply)

I was hoping to get some cheap outdated solid wood bedroom furniture, but perhaps I'll have to look at a different range.
