Provisional licence and own car.. who to use for insurance?

I'm a 35 year old woman with a provisional licence. I've got young children etc and have never been able to afford to learn to drive but then my father died and left me a bit of money to learn and buy a little car and gain myself a bit of independance.
I'm the only driver in my household and I don't have the luxury of being able to be added onto a parents insurance to make it cheaper.
I've bought a little car to learn in and took insurance out with Tesco last year for £950 and have a friend that will sit with me whilst I drive but in February my car was stolen and to cut a long story short I managed to fail my test and now I have to renew, Tesco have upped my premium to £1500 and I cant get insurance for less than £1000 from anyone else I've tried... I'm struggling to afford this and I've been told that when I pass my test my premium will go UP too!
Can anyone think of a good company that gives decent cover without exhorbitant prices. I've tried various comparison sites and am at a loss now.. Help!! I love my car

The car needs to be insured with another policy with marmalade, as part of their t&c's, collingwood will insure it in it's own right.
"Can this policy be the only insurance for the car?
No, this policy is designed to cover a car that belongs to someone else whilst you are driving so the car must remain insured by the main owner for other risks."
(collingwoodannual was half the price for us as well)0 -
Please also note that if you purchase a provisional driver policy from someone like Collingwood, cover ceases as soon as you pass your test. At that point the risk of you having an accident increases as you will be driving without an experienced co-driver.
You would probably be better to bite the bullet and seek insurance in your own name from the start. Try ringing the Co-op insurance or NFU as they do not quote via internet. Make sure that you ask if the premiums will go up once you pass your test.
At least starting off now you will be earning towards no-claims bonus in your own right, whereas if you buy a provisional driver policy you will take the hit as soon as you try and purchase a policy in your own name when you pass your test.
You also mention that you don't have the opportunity of being insured under a parent's policy to reduce cost. Please note that although some people do try and do this, insurers are very aware and when found out policies are often cancelled by the insurer leading to long-term problems in trying to buy car and home insurance. Don't try and persuade a more experienced relative to buy a policy to cover you - you must make sure insurers are aware of the correct facts.0 -
It's very rare to find a cost effective "provisional" policy that can be converted to a "full" policy for a reasonable price.
Usually it's cheaper to use two different companies.
But if you can, do it, it'll build up a ncd as bouncydog says.0
