Villa fraud - unreturned depposit

I was wondering if there is anyone that may have stayed in a holiday rental villa and not had their deposit returned?
We recently hired a villa in Ibiza, were put in touch with the villa owner through an agent and rented the villa from the individual directly. Payment for the deposit was made by bank transfer.
It was then confirmed that we would receive our deposit back having returned from holiday, as there were no damages. However after initial contact, the villa owner has now gone entirely AWOL. There is no answer to his mobile phone, no response to emails.
Does anyone know if this is a criminal activity that can be reported? Can we pursue the owner in any other way to try and get our deposit back?
Would really appreciate advice from anyone that may have been in a similar situation.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. I don't know the answer, but would say to you that if you've exhausted all possibilities of trying to make contact with this person then the next thing to do is to review on every place this villa is shown on the net (and also in review sites - just type review plus the name of the villa and area into goodle). You might find others have reviewed similar tales.
Hopefully others can advise what to do next.0 -

We have found the business that he works for which is based in Madrid but he seems to travel quite a bit (hence our inability to get hold of him)
Good idea on the reviews - at least stop other people from experiencing the same thing0
