First go to http://www.vidahost.com/domains and type the name you fancy into the search box.

If it is NOT available you may have to have a rethink on the name

It is a good idea to avoid names that are prone to spelling errors, so "quickbeauty" for instance is asking for trouble

If the name is available you can buy it there & then, I would suggest .co.uk as you are UK and presumably will not have any need for global domain name .com etc

The reason to buy the name yourself is you then have control and will not be stuck should the web designer get run over etc

I suggested Vidahost as they allow free transfer, 123 is the noraml suggestion, but they charge £10 to move.

Web design is another matter, I assume all you need is a few pages of "shop window", no buying / selling?

Roughly whereabouts UK are you? Someone may know designer near you

PS remember any pass words and keep the e-mails

  • Free hosting for a year with these chaps.

Kompozer is a good tool (& free !) for building websites etc.

  • 123-reg for the cheap .co.uk domain name

    dont use there hosting ^

use orchard hosting for the webspace. its great and you get the latest control panel with loads of preloaded stuff so you can design the sites your self with wordpress or any other of the large software scripts

    Hi,
When buying a domain for the internet it is best to get a hosted service that way you will have all your websites etc hosted on a server that is dedicated for this sort of thing, otherwise you will need to provide your own equipment of pay the web designer to host the site for you.

A good friend of mine is setting up a business in web-design and his sites are very professionaly done, I know of several that he has done recently and they are very good.
If you would like to contact him you can do so here:

I know his own site is not the best advert for him-self at the moment however this is in a re-design stage.

Another tip, when you do create your website think about the ones you have looked at and quickly clicked away from because they had horrible colours hard on the eyes, loads of text, hard to navigate, pictures that don't load, functions that don't work and many more.

Make it interesting, easy on the eyes, text easy to read and not too complicating and so on, get a counter to see how many have looked at your site, have a guest book where people can leave comments.
As the site gets bigger you should be able to buy more bandwidth and space to add more stuff like videos etc.

Counter, no, get Google analytics or similar built in, then you will not only know how many, but where they were, how they found you etc

Guest book, only if you have time to moderate it & add profanity filters, otherwise you will have a web site full of Viagra & !!!!!! links
