I'm probably the best person to ask on here.
Proton is a Malaysian company, which now owns Lotus.
My partner and I run a website for Proton owners, www.protonownersclub.co.uk, registration is free. We can give you the best info and help on it. There are a couple of variations in the model available, which one are you thinking of?
Generally across the board with most Proton models, insurance and running costs are fairly low compared to other cars of similar spec, most models have a very acceptable MPG. Aftermarket parts can be a problem sourcing, however, we've built a database up of suppliers. Standard parts are usually not a problem.
I have two 1.8 Proton coupe's and a 2.0 V6. Proton's are fantastic cars, generally good runners overall, and I've never had a major problem with any I've owned. I don't have a Gen-2, but we've had very good reports lately on the site from owners.
Usual problems across the board would be slight issues with the window regulators, usually easy fixed, and occasional sticky caliper. The Gen-2 initial releases suffered from minor interior issues, mainly badly fitted dash sections- these have been resolved in the larger future batches.

I like the look of the Gen 2. Remember seeing one on the roads a good few years back side on so never saw the badge and thought it looked quite smart.
Bit like when Hyundai launched the coupe!
Wouldn't want to own one from new, unless you plan on running it in to the ground. (purely for financial reasons).
As a 2nd owner, great value imo, 4/5 year old car for £2.5k!0 -
Yeah, they are good- I freely admit I was very dubious buying my first Proton, obviously that's change now!
I've never owned a car from new- youngest I've had was at least 6 years I think.
The Neo's catching my eye big time, despite not usually being a fan of small cars- it is very nippy. The boosted Neo in the S2000 series is a seriously nice car.0 -

Doesn't really apply to the Gen2 though, as the older models (Wira / Satria / Coupe) were based off older Mitsubishi's, whereas the Gen2 was a new design.
Be prepared for loads of depreciation, though.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
thanks for all the info - we had an old proton years ago and it was a lovely drive ,we ran it till it fell apart but this gen 2 has caught our eye so we might go have a look. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. JAKG- What was your username on the site- similar to now?
Hiya then, I've probably talked or commented on POC with you. I'm Hobbit's wife.
Valid point- Proton's don't hold value well, so they will depreciate. Gen-2 less than most, purely as it's a newer model. I've pretty much bought mine with the intention of driving til I scrap, rather than sell. It's a pity they're not marketed better in the UK, they're very under-rated cars.
Insurances- think the coupe is Group 12, but I've never had any complaints about the insurance costs- my total costs for the coupes and the v6 is less than 600-700 per year, all fully comp, though the V6 is on limited mileage.
MPG from my coupe is in the 40-45 range, the V6 is better with normal driving- hits in close to 50, which very rapidly decreases when you thrash it!
A good person to talk to would be Phil from Maple Garage. His details are on the banner at the top of our site. He's the largest Proton dealer in the UK, and I've never found a question yet he can't answer.0
