Hi, My son is 15 and has an application form for a local shop. One of the questions is "What salary would you expect?". He has no idea what to put so I thought I would ask on here. He doesn't want to put too much or too little. Thanks for any replies.:)

It would seem that 15 year olds do not fall into the national minimum wage which I personally find amazing!
Anyhow have a look here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/ParentsRights/DG_4002945
All the legal details listed here and it is aimed at parents, it seems that a 16 and 17 years old can expect £3.57 per hour, I am sure the shopkeeper will be aware of this strange he has asked a 15 year old a salary expectation to begin with!!
Hope that helps0 -
I would ask for £4-4.50 an hour.0

When's his 16th birthday?
There's no legal minimum wage for under 16s but I'd put £3.60 - just below the national minimum wage for 16-17 year olds (£3.64).0 -

This page is out of date - legal minimum wage rates changed on the 1st October so NMW for 16-17yr olds is £3.64. I'd suspect that the application form is standard rather than aimed at under 16s.

Also note that 14-16 years olds can only work:
not in prohibited industries
only light work
before 7am or after 7pm
not during school hours on any day he or she is required to attend school
not for more than 2 hours on any school day and 12 hours in any week
more than 2 hours on a Sunday
I have to live by these rules when I was 16 and still in schoolStill valid.

Employment Rights for Young People - direct.gov.uk
14 year olds
There are a lot of rules that control working hours of children, but the basic ones are:- during term time, you can only work for two hours on weekdays and Sundays
- during term time, you can only work for five hours on Saturdays
- during a school holiday, you can work for up to five hours on a week day or a Saturday
- during a school holiday, you can't work for more than two hours on a Sunday
- you cannot work before 7.00 am or after 7.00 pm on any day
If you're 15 or 16 and are working while you're still at school, your rights are almost identical to those of 14 year olds. However, you are allowed to work for up to eight hours on Saturdays or during the school holidays.0 -
Thanks everyone, that was quick! The form was a general one. MrsManda, my son isn't 16 until august. Steve, thank you for all that info. It's really helped.0
