Refused home insurance for letting out to 2 guys

Hi,

I have been refused home insurance by Barclays for letting out the house to two blokes. The reason they gave is that it has to be a couple or a family.

I haven't tried any other company at the moment, but is this correct?

Thanks,

Ravi

Are they living together as a couple as opposed to just two flatmates? I know Abbey never used to discriminate (i.e, they never stated the couple had to be heterosexual). I covered many gay couples with no problems.

I am not tht well up on anti-discrimination laws if they are a couple. But it is difficult - 2 flatmates could purport to be a couple simply to get insurance.

i would question their decision if they are a couple.
Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!

they arent refusing it due to being homophobic. I believe their policy is for owner occupier or tenant. Not landlord. That is usually the case on standard retail contents insurance. You need a non-standard policy and there are loads of those around.

  • They are not a couple and that's what I told the Barclays. They just want to rent the house and split the rent between them. The house is up on the market through a letting agent (fully managed).

Any recommendation on who would insure the house, or how to specify a non-standard policy?

Are you living in the property? If you arent then you need by to let insurance on it rather than "home" which is for owner occupied.

They need to be taking out the contents insurance, not you. That is the reason for the refusal as a standard household policy wont allow you to insure them.

You can get let insurance for contents as we mentioned but it will not be as comprehensive as them doing one. It is really designed to cover the basics. You responsibility is the buildings insurance which most insurers would consider.
