We hired a tour guide (Lily!) and driver for most of our short stay. It was not expensive at all and made our stay much more worthwhile. I suspect the savings on taxis and admission fees (Lily got us discounts everywhere) just about covered what it cost anyway!
Try and get someone local as opposed to the big companies as that way the money goes back into the community
As an aside we flew from Beijing to Hanoi and then took the sleeper train to Ho Chi Minh City which was fascinatingWon
