about content insurance

Hi,
me and my partner lives in a council rented flat and I was wondering would I have to get house and content insurance or just content insurance? but I just don't want to go with the council I want to do our own insurance but we don't know which one to go with?

You only need to insure the contents. The council are responsible for the building if you are renting from them.

As far as I am aware, the council offer quite cheap insurance but it's possibly a low level of cover.

Work out the amount of contents cover that you need - don't under insure.

Then have a shop online. When you find a policy that meets your needs you can always ring the insurer to go through the cover or clarify any points you are unsure of.

Make a note of the price you have been quoted online and any reference number as this will usually include an online discount. Most insurers will honour your online price to secure your business.

    Hope this helps
  • Hello,

What about insuring contents in private rented property, are there cheap but reliable contents only insurers for things such as cameras, games boxes, tvs, dvds, etc, etc which also may be used on travels?

    Thanks

It's no different for privately rented accommodation. Prices will vary according to your circumstances - personal details, claims history, postcode, etc.

Many policies will offer a standard accidental damage cover on contents to cover accidental damage within the home to TVs, DVD players, computers, etc.

You can request a general "personal belongings" cover for items away from the home. Some companies offer a standard amount or you may be able to specify the amount that you need. Check any exclusions - some policies require laptops to be specified on the policy separately.

If you only have a couple of items to be covered away from home it might be cheaper to specify them on the policy individually.

This type of cover will insure your items for loss or damage outside the home here in the UK and abroad but worldwide cover may be restricted to a certain number of days.

I would advise to use a few comparison sites and you can always ring any insurers if the quote meets your needs to clarify any questions on the cover.

    Hope this helps
  • Thanks for the advice,

I am having problems getting 'contents only' insurance, all the on-line companies I've tried seem to be locked into 'house + contents'. I only want to insure about a half dozen personal items of value 500-1000 each, hopefully cheaply.

    cheers

May I with respect say this is absolute tosh - all sites I have looked at ask whether you want either buildings or contents or both.
I can only think you are pressing the wrong button on your keyboard.

If its such tosh please have the courtesy to name one that will give contents only.

I have only found a small number that provide expensive cover for just a few items.

Give Endsleigh's renters insurance a go.

    Hi rhuds

Mainstream insurers will provide cover for the entire contents of the home but not usually just a few stand alone items.

You could try entering your details onto a few comparison sites - they will quote for contents only and will allow you to specify that you rent the property.

Try to work out what the minumum you would need for the entire contents and don't be tempted to underinsure. Eg if you were to get a policy with a contents value of £5k (which would cover the items that you want) but your entire contents are worth say 15K, you are underinsured by 2/3 and any claim would only be paid to 1/3 of the value of the claim.

What type of items are they? If you google you can probably find companies that will insure a laptop or a phone, etc on a standalone basis. Google gadget or laptop insurance (assuming this is what you need).

A quick look brings up insureandgo who do a gadget insurance which may suit you. However I've no personal experience of this company and I seem to remember reading that their claims handling is not great (apologies if I've got that wrong but something rings a bell with that name).

There are also companies that will do cameras and jewellery.

You would need to get prices for all your items and work out what way gives you the best cover at the lowest price.

Sorry I can't recommend any individual company but hopefully you'll find what you need.

rhuds, try comparethemarket.com You can choose just to have contents insurance. If you dont want to add up the value of all your contents look for insurers who cover up to a specified limit. You can then choose to add on things that are expensive, like jewellery or whatever but I should think most of the items you mention would be covered in the blanket contents policy. If you are taking things out of the house you will be able to choose to extend the cover.
