Santander - duplicate refund

A warning and anyone else had this? I wouldn't be surprised, it looks like a form letter, it has had a paragraph, signature and contact small print photocopied onto the bottom of the page

In September 2010 I tried to pay 3k to another persons account, Santander then blocked my account due to suspected activity. They blocked the payment and then refunded me an additional 3K.

I did notice a number of weeks later when I finally got access back to account but could have been payment from other person (as was from their bank), I knew of loads of issues with duplicate payments appearing and disappearing thought they would eventually sort it out, also with the incompetence I guessed they would only muck it up.

To be clear I'm not complaining as I've had an extra 3K for 3 months and I wasn't stupid enough to spend what wasn't mine.

Today finally got letter from Fraud Operations saying they noticed (after 2 months) "Through our normal investigations" and want the money back in 30 days and will take from my account unless I "have confirmation that you are in fact entitled to the additional payment of £3000" and ensure I have funds to avoid going into overdraft and getting charges.

Have to admit, just to be a vindictive git for all the rubbish service and problems I was tempted to string it out. Asking them to prove it's not my money and request statements highlighting issue. Or claim that this has impacted on my lifestyle and paying back would cause me untold problems. If I had the Chutzpaham I'd be tempted to ask for compensation :p but in all honesty I want the split to happen asap this is just another delay to me closing the account - they are getting more freaky than the ex that admitted they stole some of my underwear "just because", only found out because I was in their room and noticed them on her teddy bear
Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.

I would just pay it back. If you don't cooperate in these kind of circumstances they will automatically debit it even if the money isn't there. (likely given the number of times this kind of situation appears on MSE, and the number of times I have seen this outcome)

At least you have earned a bit of interest on the extra 3K!
    Best Regards

Oh, no question of not paying it back (only tempted to be annoying) as said just want to leave, can and will have funds in my account.

Seems like a standard mail merge letter but with some hasty photocopying added to bottom so was really curious if others had same issue/windfall.

Edit: Please not Zapp isn't misquoting me or deleting part of my posts, I'm a chronic re-editor.

Sounds like they had a problem with a batch of payments then. I would say it suprises me but... ;)
