I would recommend a freestanding spin dryer - similar to this one - http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=spin+dryers&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=3100443105080226379&ei=8tTZTPDAHsa3hAextMnPAg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCsQ8wIwAA

IF you can get your hands on one of those - they spin better than automatic washing machines.

I'd say one of the problems with a second-hand mangle could be the rubber on the rollers getting very worn/grubby over the years. They're also a bit of a beggar when they've been oiled - if it gets on your washing, your snookered :(.
I would agree with the spin dryer. I got one off ebay for less than £10 almost brand new, it's brilliant for giving an extra spin to things like undies and towels, especially when the weather is wet and you can't dry outside. Mine has a 2800 spin speed, so much faster than a washer, the clothes are almost dry when they come out.

    Thanks for all the help.

I was looking for something, new, modern and compact.

I just thought it would be handy to have one just to help get the heavy sheets and clothes to dry quicker.

I'd better knock something up in the shed and get myself down to see the Dragons in the Den:D

as this has dropped down the OS board, I've moved it to I wanna :)

Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
