Orange broadband query.

For my sins I'm an Orange customer and have a live box router.

I have a PC that is wire connected to the router and a lappy that is wireless connected.

I pay nearly twenty quid a month for just broadband connection, I checked with other servers and because our area is so poor the package I've got is about best and cheapest!

But it's useless!

Everything is slow. Today I rang Orange technical support team who got me onto the Live box home page where my Downstream was 3296 and my Upstream was 448 kbps. Which is good apparently for this area.

When I checked the broadband speed on a checker it shows 1208 and 355 kps on the PC, on the lappy it's only 640 and 320 kbps.

I've checked all the connections and even restored the router to factory settings, but the results are still diabolical.

Any ideas anyone?

Sorry but if the speeds are different between the laptop and the desktop connected to the same router then you have something else going on.

I personally think I'd be leaving Orange and going to Plusnet. £20 a month would get you 60GB peak use and unlimited off-peak. The ISP you're using makes no difference to your broadband CONNECTION speed, as thats dictated by the distance from the exchange and whether the exchange is ADSL2+ enabled, however it can make a massive difference to your download speeds especially during peak hours.
  • Hello adey, I too use plusnet and have been from their Totalise days, as Hammy says there should not be any appreciable difference in speed tests between Lappy/Desktop but of course when you do speed tests make sure that the only thing happening on each box is the speedtest. I would try the speed tests a few times at various times of day too to see if it is possible that Orange are throttling. Also check out your exchange on http://www.samknows.com/broadband/

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Photogenic I've been Money Tipped!
I unplugged from the master socket that comes into the house, took the plate off, behind it were billions of tiny little wires like an explosion in a spaghetti factory! Blew on them, and carefully pushed them all back in. Screwed the plate back on again everything is now working brilliantly. Must have been a poor connection at source. Just checked my lappy on http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ 2328 kbps down load and 375 kbps up load. Well happy with that. I'm just hoping this 300% improvement isn't down to being off peak

Thanks everyone for their help and advice. :D
