The only toy storage we have here is a pink pop up basket that I think is intended for laundry, was £5 from Tesco iirc. No isues, with trapped fingers, bits falling/coming off, or it falling on to littlies. Our DD is nearly 8 months we just wanted somwhere to contain her rattles, chew toys, stacking cups etc.

    Working on baby no2 :D
  • Hadn't thought of not fixing the lid, or the cheaper storage options that are being mentioned. Probably things you would do yourself, but I don't want it not to look nice or be very basic (black storage tubs £1 at tesco) because it's a gift.

I will keep having a look around and if I can't find anything I'll mention the possible concerns to SIL and see what concerns her.
  • Meanwhile have also ordered Little People Petting Zoo from Tesco. It's half price, and then I got the clubcard double up deal, so getting it for £10 instead of £40. Not sure if it was ever worth £40 but definitely good for £10.

It is 1+, so now I have another dilemma in whether to give it for Christmas or keep it for his birthday in May???
  • I have a gorgeous pine toybox that my ex husband made for me years before we had the kids, it was to provide extra storage when we had one of our first homes, but when the kids came along it was ideal for all their toys that i was given/couldnt resist buying from charity shops lol (still cant resist that!!) it currently has pride of place in my living room and all my sons elc garage and car stuff sit on top of it, he is 2 and can take them off and open/shut the lids as he likes, never had trapped fingers yet!!

I'm a big fan of Little People, and I also consider the ages on toys to be guidelines, not something you need to stick rigidly to (ie I think all the little girls in my family have had play kitchens at age 2 when it said age 3 on the box).
Does your nephew play with "toys" at the moment, or is he still into stacking cups, play gym, rattles etc? He may not be ready for the Little People yet, but then again, if he has hand-sized plastic bits that he plays with now, the Little People set would be fine for him for Christmas.
  • We have this blanket box from Dunelm - http://www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/water-hyacinth-blanket-box-111166 It looks great in our lounge and the lid is really light. It comes in different sizes as well, think we have the medium one. The best part about it is it doesn't look like a toy box (because it's not one!!!) so when all the toys are tidied away when DD is in bed we can relax in our 'adult' lounge.

Re Little People - my DD has had the little people plane since her 1st birthday but she has only recently started enjoying playing with it properly (19 months). We've just been given a little people house from a friend and she loves it. No harm giving it to him for Christmas though, as PP said it will probably depend on the types of toys he plays with now - that should help you gauge if he's ready for them.

I've not seen him with any actual toys yet. We bought him a colourful rattle and gave it to him at halloween and he seemed to quite like it. He's also playing with a lamaze pup that we bought him. I guess I'll see what else we get him and maybe withhold the little people for his birthday if I think we have enough otherwise. Already got him My Pal Scout, and also a Fisher Price talking book, and some clothes.

I swear by the Trofast range by Ikea like this http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/categories/series/19027/

It is brilliant as it comes in many different sizes and you can get different coloured boxes to go in them. What I particularly like about them is that a) the toys are tidied away so that you can't see them, b) they separate different types/sets of toys so that they are all kept together and finally c) they last them for a long time - long past when they grow out of Winnie the Pooh etc.

We have the stepped set, one in the living room, one in ds's bedroom and soon one in dd's bedroom.

RLH33- I was going to put that but thought I was the only person that would enjoy getting Trofast as a gift- obviously not :D We have the stepped ones and 2 double units in DD's room, and also a set in the living room, more on my wishlist too. My DH teases me if we move a room around he says "don't want to make too big a gap, you will fill it with more of those pink boxes" :D
