What about getting better paid jobs?"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.

well im a receptionist and without going into london, 17k is pretty good. as i cant drive and dont fancy working in london and having to pay for travel , idont see the point in going to london?
as for my other half, hes been looking for about 2 months but cant find any jobs he would like to go on to and hes put his cv on all the usual sites but hasnt even had one phone call yet.0 -
another prob is i cant do anything else and ive only ever been a receptionist so the only way to have a better postition is to move up in the company, so id always start as a receptionist

Putting my cv on websites never did me any good either, you have to actively search them out. The jobcentre is a pretty good starting point, it's free to advertise there so plenty of employers use it.
Have you thought about applying for or training yourself up to be more than a receptionist, maybe a PA or administrator."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.

apologies Lynzpower/Guy_Montag - i obviosuly didn't make myself clear (in fact reading back I didn't actually type it! lol) I have my product fixed for 2 years, after this I'm going repayment, only reason I'm doing this is that me & my g/f need to buy everything for our place, we have no furniture, white goods, anything.
by us going slightly cheaper per month means we can kit our place out, then in 2 years time, when we have slightly better paid jobs, we will then be going repayment.
@ Guy_Montag - I must have been ill-informed, as even if you have a 100% IO mortgage for 25 years, at the end of them 25 years you only owe £100k, so if house prices have gone up to £300k, means if my maths is right you are £200k better off rather than your landlord.0 -
Depends if
1) House Price Inflation has increased the value of your house
2) You've not had any problems with the house - a new roof, boiler, buying furniture.
3) Wage inflation has left £100k a negligable amount.
Then you have either pay the £100k or you sell. & what do you do with the £200k, it's not like you can buy a 1 bed flat in Croydon, they cost £300k!"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.

To be honest with you, you might want to think about working up in london, at least for a little while. I was donw in croydon in the summer and I was shocked at the wages in the agency windows SO much lower than central london- I could not believe it.
Now I know there are plenty ( spoke with an agency about this last week in fact) of receptionist jobs going in the City and they pay upwards of 25k.
It might be worth going for one of those, doing it for a year or so, theres a massive difference salary wise in 17-25, almost coming out with 650 a month more i guesstimate and would easily offset the cost, (but not the hassle of course!) of travelling in. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

yes but what will you have paid in interest payments over 25 years?
Dead money? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Dead money?
the same as anyone else who has a 25 year repayment mortgage
it isn't an issue should the OP buy or rent forever, she wants to buy at some point in the future.
I can see that this can go on all night in circles, for every point you make I'll make one in the opposite, when in fairness, I don't really care.
Just giving an opinion like you, which is what the forum is all about, you probably actually catch me next week disagreeing with someone else trying to make the same point as I am today! lol
I just like to try and give as many options as possible, and as you and Guy are batting for the "renting" team, I'm batting for the "buying" team (even though some may say you don't actually buy if you get an IO
)
but going OT and going on your idea of working up town, my g/f is "just" a receptionist for a solicitors and gets £25k a year, not great but as you say ALOT better than Croydon for a plain old greeter & telephonist!, so would defo say the OP should look into it and experience a bit of London "Culture".
also DJ Dymond, don't put yourself down £17.5k ain't too bad for "just" a receptionist!0 -
Taling about the croydon market, if im not VERY much mistaken, prices in croydon have simply NOT risen in line with the rest of london, and in fact theres some very reasonably priced property around that way.
eg http://www.housenetwork.co.uk/my_sit...ndesrm&house=1
a similar flat around this postcode would be about 80k more.
That development is right opposite IKEA just off the Purley Way, which is the main road between London and Brighton. I would not personally chose that area but what about http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-13400131.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy or even http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-5505219.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy both within 10 minutes of Croydon. Again not the best area but I reckon a better buy than opposite IKEA, esp for MSErs!!!There are times when parenthood seems nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you Peter De VriesDebt free by 40 (27/11/2016)0
