Please Help Colour advice needed

I have recently bought a house that turned out to be a disaster with huge amounts of DIY needed! Now all my funds have been spent i really need to get my decorating right as a single mother with 2 kids i have no room for mistakes!
I have decided to make my living room chimney breast a feature wall, the colour i have chosen is a dark chocolate brown with thin stems of gold leaves running through it. Can anyone suggest a colour that would go with this for the rest of the living room walls???
Oh the flooring is an oak effect laminate. I also have to decide on a fire surround as i think white would look to harsh against the chocolate brown.
What do you think?

Appreciate your suggestions

Yep agree with Ormus, I have a dark chocolate brown with gold swirls wallpaper on one wall in my lounge and I have an Almond White (very like magnolia) on the other three.

Dulux do a very light chestnut and one a slightly darker. It hasn't got that 'yellow' tinge that magnolia has.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Agree. I would even look at putty/stone/taupe colours. It is worth the small expense of match pots against the wallpaper and floor. The final colour will depend on how much light you have coming into the room so if you can get some "samples" of anaglypta from your local DIY store it might be worth painting up a couple and dotting them around the walls to see how they look in various lighting.

I have always been happy with the stores own brands at both Focus and B&Q unless there are some good offers on the big brands.

as the OP is skint, i reckon plain old magnolia is the answer.
all other suggestions will be fairly/very expensive.

Which is why I suggested using shop brand paints. :)
