Can only start in safe mode. Help please.

Options
Went on the computer this morning and no probs. I tend to leave computer on 24/7. Came back to it 2 hrs later and blue screen!!

Tried turning off and rebooting and I can now only run in safe mode.
At least I have access to the net (Phew)

Running xp3 with plenty of memory.

Where do I start?

Anyone?

Similar problem found on Bleeping Computer.Recommended action as follows

Open HiJackThis by right-clicking it to run it as administrator and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Download and run CCleaner (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked). Then click run cleaner.
  • As Safe Mode only loads a minimal set of hardware drivers I would be inclined to disconnect any uneccessary peripherals and then try to re-boot normally as a starting point.

If that doesn't work try undertaking a System Restore in Safe Mode.

    Hi Again.

Just so that you know I havent disappeared, I am running a few programs. Ccleaner, Glary, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and now Panda online.

I deleted alll of the files suggested in post #2 (Well Glary did it for me)

Sys restore got corrupted so I switched it off and deleted all the restore files as I understand viruses can lodge there.

I have had to re-boot a couple of times and each time the computer hangs when trying to load windows. It doesn't get past the 'Loading Windows' stage. I then switch off at the mains and reboot into safe with networking mode.

I fear that the Op Sys has gotten corrupted and that I may end up doing a re-install.

BTW - Super found 14 infections inc 3 trojans.

Will post another hijack log when Panda has finished (About a weeks time, then):)

As a quicker option, try hitman pro - pretty good and very quick to scan - safe mode with networking required :)

When you do get it sorted, I'd review your security software.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • If you have your OS disk you could try doing a repair install. Alternatively, if you have a caddy and access to another PC, you could connect it as a secondary drive and run chkdsk on it.

  • Hi Rizla,

There's a brief guide to do a repair install here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
And a more detailed one here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If you have a caddy I would try running chkdsk on the drive first. Use your caddy to connect it to another computer, then from the command line type:
chkdsk x:/f (where x is the letter your caddied hard drive is assigned - you can check that in My Computer).

    Well, up & running now.

    Thanks for your assistance, all.:)

    I ran Safe mode with Command Prompt and ran ChkDsk from there after going thru the 'My Comp/Properties/tools ChkDsk route and saving as 'Check disk on reboot' which it did when I rebooted and it deleted a couple of unreadable files after which it booted up perfectly.;

Then noticed that AVIRA had gone so I D/L'd and re-installed.

My Question is, that If I have Online Armour AND Avira, how can something like a virus get in and change/corrupt my settings?

I thought that this is what they are meant to prevent?
