Dodgy store card payments

HI folks, I'm hoping someone can help answer this for me.

I made a purchase a while back on a well known large store card, and at the end of the month sent a cheque to cover the amount and forgot all about it. The store says they didn't receive the payment so they charged me interest on my purchase. I then sent a cheque for the purchase minus the interest with a letter explaining I'd previously sent a cheque. The store this time banks the cheque but the following month I get another statement with even more interest on top.

I'm now being sent letters threatening it will go to a debt collection agency, but I still think I'm not to blame, just because I didn't check the store had banked the 1st cheque. As time goes on, the interest is getting higher but I am loathe to pay it even to stop the debt from creeping up.

Am I right, what do you think?

I think the majority will disagree with you. Also, by not paying the interest now and trying to claim it back later, you are running the risk of doing real damage to your credit history. Do you want credit in the near / longer term future ? Having non-payments on your record will cause you problems.
  • Thanks for your advice Vuvuzela. It's so frustrating that a company can benefit where I'd paid my bill on time (or thought I had), but a lesson to be learnt there.

Suppose I better get the cheque book out again ....

Set up a direct debit. You do know it's 2010?:)
  • Personally I would of done it at the bank or online. That way, there is no excuse!

If the first cheque was debited from your bank account but the store claim they did not receive it, ask your bank to trace it through the clearing system to discover which account it was credited to. If it's gone to the wrong account your bank will help correct it (a possible fraud).
