Bristol - I studied here for 4 years and then never left! Ive visited the Brighton Campuses and they seemed alright - it really just depends whether you want a 'beach' city or urban city. There is something for everyone in both.

Portsmouth doesnt really compare to either. Have you visited Brighton? If not, take a quick tour and then base the decision on how you felt. I came to Bristol and knew instantly that it was the place for me and dont regret it for a second.

Portsmouth compared to Bristol is near enough like comparing a village to a city.
There is a really nice club called the Union its a £5m purpose built by the uni SU and is pretty lush, apart from that you have a club called Tiger Tiger in town which frequently has problems with fights, drugs and spiked drinks (a lot of this).
Apart from them you really just have bars pretending to be clubs but they aint. There is a large student communit especcially around Fratton Park as IBM headquarters are there which also takes on about 100-150 students a year.

    RUBBISH!!
Portsmouth is a really vibrant city, which is also going through a period of redevelopment. The Portsmouth North Project will be underway soon, where they will be building a massive shopping centre etc.

Tiger Tiger is not the only club in Portsmouth and it is not in Town, and they do not have frequent problems as you have stated. I've been there loads of times, and never seen any problems, and I know people who work on the doors and they have never mentioned that there are huge issues like that, in fact I personally feel that it's probably one of the safest clubs in Portsmouth.

Tiger is in Gunwharf Quays which has loads of bars, and restaurants, Jongleurs Comedy club...
What about the clubs along the seafront? they aren't "bars pretending to be clubs".
And there is going to be a new club opening in Easter next year, behind Commercial Road.
There's Guildhall walk as well which is a bit chavvy, but it does have student nights during the week, and is right next to the big Halls of Residence, so it's only a short stagger home.

Portsmouth is an Island, so everything is crammed into a comparatively small area, but it's such a diverse place, it gives the illusion that it's much bigger.
Whatever scene you're into, you'll find something that you enjoy!!

:p lol ive lived in Brighton all my life and yes its known for having lots of gays but i wouldn't say its gay orientated! :rotfl: There are 2 big unis here, University of Sussex and Brighton so the social scene for students is huge! Lots of bars, clubs, restaurants.. shopping is also great here!

Im sure you have already decided on your chosen uni.. which did u decide?

I do not know much about the social scene in Brighton as it is very gay orientated, I had a friend go there simply on the fact that as there was such a great proportion of gay men, there would be more women available!

Anyhow Brighton is not that good academically while portsmouth and UWE are about the same place.

Brighton is good academically, somewhat better than Portsmouth and UWE!

The social life down here is *not* restricted to the 'gay' population... I hate it when people from outside of the area generalise that everyone is l/g/b/t and/or on drugs! The social life is great down here!

I went to UWE at first and was treated like rubbish, I hated it. I went to a uni close to home for my undergrad, and then went to Brighton for my Postgrad. Whilst at uni in London, I actually met quite a few people who'd started at UWE but transferred, so it's not all that great!!

    Un sou est un sou
  • I went to UWE first before changing uni's after the first year. I found (out of the main campus- I was on Glenside doing Nursing) that some of the lecturers were very hard to get in contact with, the SU was good and some of the student support available was also good.

The main problem I found was that the lectures I had were huge, about 200 students in a small lecture theatre and leturers not willing to answer questions afterwards (strange) and the faculty and modile leaders not willing to help to resolve problems on the course.

However...this is my personal experience, based on my course.

  • I actually looked at both brighton and bristol uwe. and its true, it does depend what youre studying. bristol is probably more of a oxbridge rejects kinda students whereas brighton is more arty and creative city.

im doing fine art sculpture and brighton is a pretty good place for art subjects.

depends what subject youre doing and what kinda of city you want to live in.

    Brighton
loads of different kinda music going on, indie, dance, r+b. always soemthing going on every night. not as gay orientated as people think. more than your usual town but not competely over populated either. quite boho cool and all that jazz.

    Bristol
I cant really say much for bristol other than bristol is like any other city ive been to. its not bad but its not great. night life is pretty good, been there a few times.

good luck with it...and defaintely consider brighton and feel free to email.
