Imaging hard drive with Windows Complete PC Backup - alternative?

Hey all
Had an issue with my laptop recently and ended up restoring from a recovery disk. Unfortunately this was the image which came with the laptop which meant reinstalling Vista service packs and all my programs.
I want to image my hard drive regularly so I don't have to go through this pain again. I'm running Vista Home Premium so using Windows Complete PC backup is out of the question. Can anyone recommend alternatives (preferably free / open source) that they have actually used which will do the imaging for me?
(I did read the backup sticky thread before I posted BTW)

Clonezilla is free and open source.0

But it's ugly and you need to boot from CD to use it. The paragon one loads in Windows and uses VSS to create disk images. Nice and easy to back up.Clonezilla is free and open source.0 -
