Car insurance - main driver etc.

Wife and I have always had two cars with an insurance policy in each of our names (with the other person being named driver).

However, its now the case that I drive the car insured in her name more than I do the other one (and vice versa), so I was thinking of swapping them around.

Trouble is one policy A is coming to an end and other is 6 months through (B). So I could amend policy B to make me main driver from now on (can you do this?) and then get new policy A in wifes name instead of renewing in mine.

Only trouble is how would I get no claims proof for wife since policy is half way through - previous renewal?

Or is it just too much hassle????

Actually, is there a distinction between policy holder and main driver or should they be the same?

When myself and my OH were in a very similar situation , we telephoned our insurance company who happened to be BUDGET insurance at the time , and they told us that it was not possible to switch drivers mid way through the policy .

Not sure if this is standard ? We would have needed to end the policy and take out a new one to reflect the new main driver of the vehicle.

We were also told that the policy holder does not have to be the main driver. If you needed to , you could have yourself as policy holder and your wife as main driver or vise versa.
The loopy one has gone :j

Can't you just phone your insurer and tell them you've bought a new car and you wish to transfer the policy? Then your wife does the same.

The fact that you've "bought" each other's cars is of no relevance to the insurance company.

Just change the cars over - put the one you use the most on your policy and the other one on your wifes. Can't see why this would cause a problem.
