I am self employed and 2 functioning computers are essential for me as I travel around a lot. After a disaster when both failed in 2007, I bought:
- A little notebook for travel/daily work/surfing
- A large Sony laptop. This sits like Queen Victoria safely at home. I dont use the keyboard or screen or memory (I keep all docs on a separate hard drive). I only rarely go online with this one.
Should I:
- Replace with a new computer I do feel like buying the Dell Zinio or similar (cost at least £400)
- Do what is probably the MSE thing and increase the RAM if so how eay is it to do it.

have you done all the normal maintenace suggested such as malware bytes, hijack this, defrag, even fresh install, if you can give more details as to what the system spec is etc and commit charge etc we will be able to advise you in more details (also the Zino really isnt a massively impressive system for the price)
have you thought of popping more ram in it and then upgrading to windows 7? as another optionDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
how easy is it to add more ram?0

although it depends on the laptop model etc it is usually pretty easy,
last time i did it i had to take out 4 screws, pop out the panel the screws held in, then push the ram into its slot, pop the panel back on and then put the 4 screws back and bobs your uncle it was done (this is of course with everything turned of :P )Drop a brand challenge

Go to https://www.crucial.com/uk and enter the model details or use the scanner and buy what it recommends (100% no quibble compatibility guarantee)
Next you'll find a small cover on the base of the laptop with a couple of screws holding it in. Undo the screws, pop open the cover. You'll see the memory there. To remove it, merely push the plastic clips out away from the sides of each memory stick and lift it up. To replace - you'll see a slot cut into the edge with the litttle metal connections. Make sure it lines up with the peg in the slot, insert into the slot at a 45 degree angle, make sure its in the slot firmly then push it down until the clips lock into place.

if you keep all the docs on an external drive, what happens if that fails?
post the specs of the machine, installed ram, commit charge, peak commit charge from task manager, performance, along with a hijackthis log. run a full updated malwarebytes scan, and fix anything found, and you will get advice on how to speed it up to how it was when you bought it without upgrading ram.!!

I'm not techie at all, but just a couple of weeks ago upgraded the RAM in my trusty old Thinkpad laptop. I downloaded a guide from the internet & it was a real doddle & done in a matter of seconds.
Boosted by this success I have today upgraded the memory in my desktop, which still has a fairly decent spec but a only measly 512 of RAM. I ordered a 1Gb stick, which means I now have 1.5Gbs. Crucial & other respected sellers of memory have scanners on their sites to download, which scan your system & tell you the maximum upgrade possible for your machine & make suggestions as to what modules would be most suitable to do the upgrade. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
