£179 for 2 MOTs and Services. Good deal?

Just bought a new car and have the option for of getting MOT and Service for the next 2 years at £179 if I pay within the next couple of weeks. It's kinda stretching me a bit so I was wondering if people think this is a good deal. I'm new to owning a car and not sure what is a reasonable price for a service.

The car is a Peugeot 307 1.6 s 38K 2006.

I'm tempted as It means that I wouldn't have to worry about those costs for the next 2 years but I'm concerned the garage by try to make the money up with the cost of any required repairs.

The deal is being offered by a very large Scottish motor trader not prizes for guessing who.

the service includes (seems like a long list but what should be expected from a service?)
Check Horn Operation
Check Basic Instrument Operation
Check Wiper & Washer Operation
Check Heater & Air Conditioning Operation
Check Hand Brake Operation
Check for Excessive Oil Leaks
Check Exhaust Condition & Security
Check Brake Lining Wear & Tear
Check Brake Disc Wear & Tear
Check Brake Wheel Cylinders
Check Brake Pipes & Hoses
Suspension Safety Check
Steering Safety Check
Renew Engine Oil
Renew Oil Filter
Check Lights Illuminate
Set Tyre Pressure
Check Lamp Lenses for Damage
Check Coolant Level & Anti-Freeze Content
Check Brake/Clutch Fluid Levels & Top Up
Lubricate Door Hinges & Locks
Check Power Steering Fluid Level
Check Battery Levels & Connections
Advise if Timing Belt is Due Replacement
Advise if Pollen Filter is Due Replacement
Check Visible Drive Belts
Check Wiper Blade Condition
Renew Air Filter
Add Screen Wash Additive
Check Spark Plugs (Advise If Replacement Required)
Check Tyres for Wear & Damage (Complete Report)
Road Test & Report

    Check Horn Operation
    Check Basic Instrument Operation
Check Wiper & Washer Operation charge for new blades
Check Heater & Air Conditioning Operation charge for regass
Check Hand Brake Operation charge for adjustment
    Check for Excessive Oil Leaks
    Check Exhaust Condition & Security
Check Brake Lining Wear & Tear - tell customer their brakes are worn and need replacing.
Check Brake Disc Wear & Tear - see above.
    Check Brake Wheel Cylinders
Check Brake Pipes & Hoses on such a new car I doubt they would have the cheek to try this one on!
Suspension Safety Check spray some oil on shocks and tell customer it is leaking.
Steering Safety Check charge for tracking and alignment.
Renew Engine Oil Charge for 5/30 semi but stick in Tesco value 20/50 mineral. Then charge £5k for a new engine six months later.
Renew Oil Filter just clean old one.
    Check Lights Illuminate
    Set Tyre Pressure
    Check Lamp Lenses for Damage
Check Coolant Level & Anti-Freeze Content charge silly price for renewing coolant.
Check Brake/Clutch Fluid Levels & Top Up At four years old the brakes should be bled and fluid changed I would have thought.
    Lubricate Door Hinges & Locks
Check Power Steering Fluid Level Charge for fluid that may not exist since many modern cars have a motor instead.
    Check Battery Levels & Connections
Advise if Timing Belt is Due Replacement I can't argue with this.
Advise if Pollen Filter is Due Replacement
    Check Visible Drive Belts
Check Wiper Blade Condition Replace blades and charge a fortune.
Renew Air Filter well yes it is a service.
    Add Screen Wash Additive
Check Spark Plugs (Advise If Replacement Required) again that is the idea of a service.
Check Tyres for Wear & Damage (Complete Report) Try and sell at least one tyre and we will give 20% commision per tyre.
Road Test & ReportPick up some prostitute and fully test the suspension.

See above, some call me cynical but! I think I have a very good idea who the trader is but my comments are not aimed at them just how cynical I am of servicing and MOT offers on any car out of warranty.

I have gone over the top on a lot of my comments but I am pretty sure we have had people complaining about all the above was done when it shouldn't have been at times.

So the service is just an oil filter & new oil and an air filter? Everything else is just checks.

I bet they find a lot of that stuff needs replacing as well, Maybe?

Im sure you will notice if the Horn, Heaters, Lights etc.. etc.. Do not work.

Want to know if the cambelt is due, Check the cars handbook or phone a dealer no need to pay to
find that out. xx miles or xx years.

Check sparkplugs and advise if replacement is required? How will they check them? Mine looked exactly the same
after 60,000 miles compared to the new ones i was fitting. Handbook will explain service details. What to replace
    and when.

It's not a bad price for 2 MOT's and two oil changes, but I wouldn't tie myself in even so.
It depends on whether or not you know a good garage, if you do, go there instead.
  • The price isnt too bad but expect lots of required repairs. Now do the terms mean you have to get advised repairs to keep up the insurance/deal?
  • Cheers for the responses, I also notices that very few items are actual servicing and most are checks that could lead to further cost. But is this any different from any other garage? It is easy to be cynical about these things.

The deal is from Arnold Clark called the Clark plan, does anyone experience of getting their car serviced at there (particularly in Edinburgh)?

I bought my Panda from AC and I found them ok. They were not pushy really but then I bought it via telephone and got them to drive the car to me (82 miles).

I did also use my local AC for a free vehicle inspection on my Corsa who discovered the leaking shocks (I knew about that anyway) and also told me about a worn ball joint which also was true. However I was quoted over £500 for the work which my local indie did for less than £150.
