Aviva Car Insurance - New Customer Definition?

Hi,

I was just wondering whether anyone knew what Aviva car insurance would define a "new customer" as?

Is it someone that has never had car insurance with them? or someone that has not had car insurance with them for a year, or a longer period?

For example; I'm currently a customer with them, if I do not renew my policy and I go with another insurer for a year, would I be classed as a new customer the following year if I went back to them?

Thanks in advance.

  • Yes you'll be classed as a "new customer" as you're no-longer their customer.

If say you let your policy lapsed (cancel the auto renewal) by even 1 minute, you would still be classed as a "new customer".
  • Thanks for that Dan.

Do you know how I would cancel the auto-renewal?

Just logged on to check my policy now.. for some reason they have my telephone number down as 01234 567899 and my email address as my.name22@antarse.com ? also apparently I'm married! (I'm not!)

Curious how their data held on me can change itself randomly? bizzare!

You do not even need to cancel. Just phone around for cheapest quote then ask them to price match.

Although I do wonder why anyone would want to stay with Aviva. If and when you make a claim you may regret it. I found their customer "service" dreadful.

Aviva's online system is brill. Get a new quote from them online and it automatically recognises your with them offering you up to 15% discount. Cancel your policy from renewal and just accept the online policy. Did that for this years policy and went through absolutely fine :)! Got a cracking deal too.
  • I called up when my renewal came in, told them I didn't want to renew.
Went through TopCashBack, went with Aviva (again) and obtained the cashback and the new customer rate.
No lapse in dates either. I bought the new policy 3 weeks before the old one expired.
  • I've been wondering the same thing. The new rules around insurance mean that you have to have continuous insurance now, so presumably you can't let the old one run out, but can just cancel the renewal and take out a new one to start on the day after.

I'll give it a go anyway!
