Moving my gas meter outside

I'm planning to renovate the area underneath the stairs in my house and put in a downstairs loo. At the moment there is a cupboard there in which the gas meter is in.
I need to get the gas meter moved. Preferably to the front of the house in a semi-concealed meter box.
Does anyone have any experience of this process or any advice? Who do I need to contact to make this happen? I understand from reading other posts that it is going to be expensive.
Thanks!
(Have also posted this in the "In my Home" Board as I wasn't sure which was the best section)

Contact your local supply company, they will refer you, expect a cost of around £1K.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Which area of the country do you live in? This will determine who you should contact.

I would say a minimum price would be £600 for this work.

I live in Hove in the South-East. It's quite a distance from under the stairs to the front of the house so I know it's going to be costly. However I don't think I can convert this space without doing that and I need to put in a downstairs loo (currently members of family and friends with disabilities can't come to my house because I don't have one).
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks everyone (lemontart especially for the Southern Gas Networks information).

They're sending out a surveyor to quote for the job. I'm also going to speak to a builder and find out if there's anyway to build the downstairs loo and keep the meters where they are (moving the gas and electric meters is going to add up!)

    Thanks for the advice!!!
  • Cant you just box the meter in just build a mdf box with a hinge on or buy a ready made box, it would be a lot cheaper than £600 most people who pay that costs hence why you see them in many houses
