I didn't have carpets in the last house I owned, even though I was there 7 years. Could never afford them. I did, have them in 2-3 rooms after about 3 years. I did pick up some lovely random bits and bobs and some £3 runners here and there over the years. I kind of never even thought about it. I just lived without, didn't even occur to me I was missing out... and no, the floorboards weren't sanded or finished at all, they were just rough old boards with holes.
  • I never said I wasn't greatful....I asked a simple question! I have never lived in a HA home and didnt know how they did things...that is all! Yes I have been fortunate enough to live in privately rented properties until now, but yes we have been offered this house for reasons that is only the business of the HA! Thanks to all those who answered my query nicely, it does help.
We dont need to worry about other furnishings such as curtains, cooker etc as already have that, some stuff we will sell as prob wont fit in. other than that we are kitted out. The carpets which are in our current house must stay tho so cant take them

Have to agree no to carpets this is our second HA property, jus wish ours had been a new build tho. When we moved from our HA flat to this house we was warned if we didn't clean the flat properly. they'd do it for us and bill us - fair enough. But i expected them to have told the same thing to the previous tenants of the house..... nope not a chance. The downstairs floor was filthy and the space between the gripper rods and the wall was stuffed full of matted dogs hair. eewwww took a screwdriver to prise it out. Every room suffered from tobacco staining badly even the bedrooms :( And they'd fixed motorbikes and left oil spills in the back garden, great with 18mth old twins. And just about every room needed repairing due to damage to the walls. Was disgusting. Even the liasion officer agreed and managed to get us some compensation and decorating money from HA.
We also had to completly carpet but we went down the route of buying roll ends. Was much cheaper this way and tho it was fitted perfectly OH did it and it's down on the stairs and in one bedroom 14 yrs later!!!!! ( but the stairs do desp need replacing but having manky carpet is better than no carpet as the noise is terrible)

Good luck with your new home x

One other thing to be aware of: have had 2 new HA houses over the years and neither had any curtain rails or fittings, just nice new smooth walls around the windows.
Came as a bit of a shock the first time, and having to sleep in a room with no curtains until you can afford the rails is far worse than having no carpets!

Oh and neither of my properties had grass/lawn either, just a sea of mud to deal with!

Gosh, I think I was lucky - my HA not only provided a carpet throughout my flat, but even replaced the old skanky one with a new one before I moved in (I asked nicely). Guess it depends on the HA.
