Not true, once a letter has been posted to an address then anyone can open. You only break the law if you open it with the intention of gaining an advantage.0 -
i moved and forgot to tell tesco til ages later and they were really good at canceling vouchers that were sent and sending me new ones . i thin k you have to have the card now mum and i used to swap the special offer type ones we would sometimes get she was Mrs 'killielila' and i was miss but havent tried for a while because was told that they had changed policy send unknown at this address tempting tho 50 odd quid of 'free' vouchers would be not worth getting challenged and a big lot of bother attempted fraud etc as well as tampering with mailfinances disaster but baby-stepping back to security:
2024 let's do this !!0 -
sorry to say but this would be classed as theft by opportunism. however......if I found money is the street and didnt know who is belonged to then I would keep it (even though this is still classed as the same kind of theft)find a deal....pass it on :beer:0

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
Not sure how you could open it by accident, its heavily written all over it that its from Tesco so you would have known it was vouchers.0

*new*mummy* could well be a clubcard points collector in her own right and assumed it was addressed to her.
In my opinion, perfectly reasonable.0 -

Not this old chestnut, again.
It is not illegal to merely open mail not addressed to you, it only becomes so if you use the correspondence to the detriment of the recipient.
(I wish we could make this a big flashing sticky, along with the 'secret EU consumer laws' this must me the most mis-advised subject on the entire forum)Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

...please feel free to direct us to the official 'old chestnut' law?0 -

Postal services act 200084
(1)A person commits an offence if, without reasonable excuse, he—
(a)intentionally delays or opens a postal packet in the course of its transmission by post, or
(b)intentionally opens a mail-bag.
(2)Subsections (2) to (5) of section 83 apply to subsection (1) above as they apply to subsection (1) of that section.
(3)A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him0 -

I've never been asked to show my Club Card when using vouchers.
It's perfectly reasonable to assume that the OP opened the letter in good faith, could have a Club Card of their own, or simply opened it thinking it was junk mail, so this is not the issue.
It's a moral thing really, you probably won't get caught using them, especially if you go through self service. If I was in your position I cannot honestly say what I would do, temptation is a powerful feeling. The people replying to this who state that they would be honest have most likely never been in your situation, I'd bet half of them would crumble if they were.
Taking all that into account, I'm not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, only you can decide. We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0
