Replace Laptop DC Power Jack

Hi there,

My laptop power jack g=has stopped working! I just wanted to ask 2 questions if anyone can spare the time?
  • Is this a job that is easy to do yourself? Or,
  • Is £60 a fair quote for having it done professionally?
Thanks in advance!
Pete

    £60 seems overly cheap

you can do it youself if you can solder, normally videos showing you how to dismantle on the web

some laptops ( ASUS in particular) have plug in units which are easily reached and replaced by removing a few screws (they have wires that plug them into the motherboard as opposed to solder)

I paid £60 to get mine fixed. I had to strip it down to motherboard level first, cost was £100 if you just sent the complete laptop.

TBH, £60 was good value IMO compared to the cost of a new motherboard to replace the one I'd probably wreck with a soldering iron.
  • Cheers folks - thing is, I've got an old Acer 1644wlmi which had exactly the same problem, so I might give it a try on there and see how I get on before I decide whether to have a go at the newer one in question!

Any tips for any routine maintenance I could do while I'm in there?

Always worth having a go yourself.

The actual changing of the socket is pretty much the same on all laptops, the route into it can be markedly different.
Some (most in my experience) are accessed through the top above the keyboard, some are from the bottom.

Youtube can be helpful, there are many guides for dismantling laptops. Just make sure it is not plugged in and the battery is removed.

Blow all the dust and crap out of the fan and heatsink. You'll be shocked at how dirty it is.
  • Excellent - I'll give it a go! As I say, I've got an old laptop which is fit for the bin otherwise, so I'll start with that before I try anything of worth! :D
